In May 1965 - I had a short lived career as a 2nd Lt with the 714th Railway
Operating Battalion at Fort Eustis, VA. For approx 3 weeks - I was
"yardmaster" of the MG&B (Main Gate & back) railway on post. At the time -
we probably had 6 or so operating steam locomotives.

On Memorial Day weekend 1965, we ran numerous steam excursions around the
post - primarily for those stationed there and their dependents.

Unfortunately, President Johnson had bigger things for me to do as a 2nd Lt
in the US Army. On June 1, 1965, I was reassigned to the 597th Truck Company
which was in the process of immediate deployment to SE Asia (Vietnam). My
new job was that of a truck convoy commander in the Central Highlands of
Vietnam.

When I returned to the USA a year later - came back to Fort Eustis, VA but
in an administer role at Headquarters, Transportation School.
