Jim: the WV quad is DELBARTON. Matewan and the oxbow are at the bottom
edge. The Ohio River extension of the N & W went into service November 1892, so
as close to that date as available. Would also be helpful to have the date
of construction for the tunnels, if anyone has that information. From 'legal'
distance, even with my best telephoto, could not pick out any dates on the
portals.
Example, not N & W, of what we can learn from old maps. I was looking at
the former NYC trackage on the north side of the Harlem River in New York City.
Noticed one piece of land in the Bronx is marked as being in the borough of
Manhattan ! Found an older map of the area; in the 19th century, there was
a loop in the Harlem River at that point, and the original NYC main line
followed the top of the loop. later, the land was filled in and the NYC main
line was straightened; but that area is still Manhattan, not the Bronx.
