I agree with Terry's comment and also offer opinion that this has the makings of an interesting book.  Twenty or so years ago, there was a book in the popular press of which large parts consisted of nothing much more than a listing of day-to-day activities (subject was a cotton plantation).  This possible book might need nothing more than to be a linear compilation perhaps with an editorial introduction.  Annotations might be useful to help novices and a younger generation with archaic terms and industry jargon.  Some such might even be drawn from this group's responses to various postings.

   JUNE 1, 1928.  1st 85, Engine 2088, Roanoke to Bluefield.

  Engineman J W Kirk, Fireman G W Roberts.  Conductor ADB, Flagman Bibbie [his first name was Bristol,] Head End Brakeman Wheaton [first name George, I think.]

  Reported 9:30am
  Departed Roanoke 9:55am.  
  Arrived Bluefield 2:45pm.  
  No other times shown.

  54 loads, 1 empty, 1915 tons.  Contents of cars listed as tobacco, mdse, yarn, furniture, cotton, p nuts, shooks, p-press [printing press?,] grain, soap, soup, inflamable, rugs, fire works, cigarettes, p & beams, carpets, victrolas, magazines, sugar, paper and "d middling."  Some of these entries were obviously written while the train was moving and are hard to read.

  Notes:  "Set M&O 23881 off at West End left bill with switchman."   For the 13th car in train, N&W 67288, Grandfather writes "No such car wired CD [Chief Dispatcher?] GJ MM from Vicker."

  Train 1st 84, Bluefield to Roanoke, Eng 2088, Same crew as previous trip.  87 cars, 3104 tons.

  Reported 8:30am
  Departed Bluefield 8:58am.  
  Ada 9:22am - 9:40am.  
  Elliston 12:20pm - 12:40pm.  
  Arrived Roanoke 1:35pm

  Contents of cars listed as mdse, G sheets, feed, starch, hay, paper, pulp, flour, auto, wheels, wood, tobacco, lumber, spuds, potato, inflamable, soap, pipes, asbestos, lime, salt, meat, lard and beef.

  No other entries.
