Terry:
Mines along NS and CSX have a new competitor - coal from the Powder
River Basin. Probably this has lowered dumpings at Newport News and
Lamberts Point. It's even possible to stand behind the NS offices in
Atlanta and see unit trains of BNSF hoppers en route to Georgia utilities.
One other item -- CSX down played Newport News in favor of dumping
coal at Baltimore years ago. With the exception of a push eastbound
out of Fulton Yard-Richmond, it takes CSX more horsepower to return
the mtys to the mines than it does to get the loads to Tidewater. Just
what the CSX logic was in pooh-poohing Newport News, I don't know.
