Builders and Number Plates: Material ?

Oh, Ye Savants and Sages !  Ponder the following question, and gush forth 
Pearls of Wisdom !   (Wake up there, James B. & Co.... this one is aimed at you ! 
)

What is the history of the various types of metals used by the N&W for its 
builder's and number plates?  When were the transitions made between cast iron 
and brass/bronze/or whatever ?

Also, just for fun, what are the oldest living N&W builder's and number 
plates known to be in captivitiy?
