Regarding the Class K in local freight service -- Lamberts Point regulary
furnished
engine 110 for a Petersburg Turn. The Ks may have been somewhat cumbersome
for
locals, but were restricted only at industrial sidings and connections in
Suffolk and Petersburg. Suffolk and Petersburg, of course, had 0-8-0's
assigned for switching service. Later, Class Js were furnished for the Petersburg
Turn and even worked the spur to Gray Lumber at Waverly, previously
restricted to Class A, J, and Mallet engines. Forever etched
in memory -- Eng 600 returning from Petersburg with the local on the 52-mile
tangent Poe - Kilby. In tow was a scale test car, which restricted the
speed to 30 MPH -- a far cry from the days of hustling No. 26 to Norfolk at
whatever.
