All of the Class J tenders were modified with auxiliary tender connections
and also received the cubolas in January to March 1958. This was done at
Shaffers Crossing and the Roanoke Shops. This was probably done in
anticipation of their use in freight service. After leasing passenger
diesels in July 1958, the J's were used in freight work to run out their
serviceable miles.
