Dave, I'm sure you don't mean "a" syphon.  There needed to be at least three
in a firebox the size of a 2-6-6-6, plus maybe one more in the combustion
chamber.  The photo of the 2-6-6-6 under construction in the
Huddleston/Shuster/Staufer book shows three.

The VGN AG's had 3 syphons and the berks had 2.  The H-8 book by Huddleston 
has 3-4 good pictures of a boiler upside down with the syphons in plain view.
